There is no mistaking the Pure NZ brand of clean, green and unspoiled. Lurking beneath these calm waters is a very different story. The stasis that characterises much of New Zealand’s urban environment is often disrupted by violent seismic activity, while the social landscape is fraught with disadvantage, exclusion, addiction and racial tension. Fault Lines gives expression to this stasis. Through an examination of form that speaks of Polynesian adornment; the commonplace and oddly placed; the lived anxiety of seismic tremor; and the mediation of nature, the once familiar becomes +0000 Simon Cuthbert https://simoncuthbert.com.au/Alma-mater Alma mater2011/2012 &nbsp; POP Gallery, Brisbane - 6th - 19th November 2023 In the leafy southern suburbs of Brisbane behind a screen of weed-entangled fencing lies and abandoned education campus. The former Queensland College of Art (1974-2000) is dominated by an ensemble of distinctive multi-level rough-cast concrete structures clustered around both open air common and connecting spaces. Brute concrete blinds adorn some buildings protecting against the fierce subtropical sun. Weathered signage indicates directions to the various studio destinations: sculpture, ceramics, painting, commercial art, printmaking, illustration, photography, interior design, graphics etc. Arrows direct the user and oddly allude to the hierarchical structure of the creative arts. Vegetation flourishes in unkempt gardens softening the concrete with a shimmering verdant green, an effect that threatens to reclaim the place. For ten years this site sat in limbo, local residents challenging plans for a broad-acre housing estate, arguing there would be adverse impacts on existing property values. Through this lengthy process the site was secured from vandalism with regular security patrolling. As the proceedings drew to a close with demolition eminent, the patrolling ceased and the site was left to the graffiti taggers and vandals that descend on such abandoned places. In no time the empty student-less corridors, stairwells and classrooms were radically transformed into a lurid zone of spray can expression and shattered glass. The exterior images in the series of photographs were made first when the site was relatively secure. The interior images followed once the perimeter had been breached and trespass made possible. They are intended to operate in paired groups to emphasie their binary qualities, with a few works standing alone. Returning to this significant site in my own journey as an artist, after 35 years, my initial response was of the Lilliputian compression that happens with the elapsing of time. Standing and walking through spaces where I had stood and walked so many years before created a powerful nostalgic flood of responses in the silence and vacancy of the place. Following this was a sense of the profligate waste that abandoning such infrastructure represented when government policy betrays community values. Bristling with despondency and despair, the site is emblematic of the collapse many see occurring in the cultural mission of our society. With this body of work I am continuing my interest in the human dimensions we invariably find inscribed in the built environments that we create and occupy, and the ability for these environments to transmit truths beyond their materiality. 2023 03:25:49 +0000 Simon Cuthbert https://simoncuthbert.com.au/The-Architecture-of-Waiting The Architecture of Waiting 2017 Like sleep, a good deal of life is spent waiting. Waiting for the kettle to boil, a bus, train or taxi to arrive or a long haul flight to touch down. There’s the anxious wait for the mailmen at exam time; the outcome of a blood test; the verdict for a judicial sentence to be handed down. Writers wait for inspiration, architects wait for affluent clients, while artists wait for payment. War brides experience a cruel wait, and only children know the excitement of waiting for the tooth fairy. For every complexion in life there is a waiting. After all, life begins with its own wait in the biological processes of gestation and labor. Sometimes, we wait for death. For the dying there is an equally varied complexion of possibility but generally speaking it is preferred to be peaceful in the night, more often protracted and palliative, it can be sudden, tragic and traumatic and sometimes mysterious. For those supporting the dying, time and space distort in the presence of impending death. Bedside vigils disrupt the normal patterns of life with sleep coming in shifts and sustenance delivered through vending machines. In the moments away from the vigil a profundity descends on the realm of the normal as light, sound, texture and colours all appear different as the senses adjust through the veil of mortality. Many of the images in this series were made while my mother’s life slowly ebbed and in the weeks leading up to the event of her death. As such they are lower case revelations of the minor chord kind, quiet moments extracted from the aggregate of suburban life and charged with deeper meaning. Some refer directly to the architectural edifice in which motifs of waiting may be discerned while others were made in the moments away from the vigil wandering the familial streets of my childhood discovering things anew; a Jewish synagogue I never knew existed, biblical references amongst the picket fences. Obsolescence and redundancy are declared in abandoned theaters, grandstands and landlines as old themes are revisited suggesting a passing and moving on of things. A unifying theme might therefore be found in the systems of hope, faith and belief rendered in the material world and suggestive of a more spiritual quest. entitled Branded consider the role architecture can play in the packaging and delivery of goods. Featuring the shop fronts of international fashion houses in Tokyo’s Harajuku retail district the images present the couture fashion message embodied in architectural form, with each establishment bearing the single potent element of its marketing and product success; the brand name. These buildings are a testimony to the guarantee we look for in a label and the ability of packaging to transmit the marketing message and begin the cycle of consumption. The minimal austerity of these spaces, occupying the public space of the street as they do, are an associative reminder to even the disciplined consumer of the quality found in a name. <img of plastic green Paddy Craic, this exported expression of Irish-ness, with its embedded sentiments of partition, militancy, and the IRA, deeply offends those in Ireland. In the midst of continuing talk of hard borders and trouble continuing to fester with bombs and fatal shootings recently in Derry and a Catholic Church in ethical and moral collapse, the task of dismantling the reality of Irish-ness and its endless Pug Malone and Bridie O’Reilly diasporic variants is harder to do. I was raised in a proud Irish Catholic family in a predominantly Catholic city (in which the descendants of the Irish were, for all their numbers, not at the top of the pile). I was taught in Catholic schools in classrooms, filled mostly with Irish Catholic children: there were the O’Deas, the O’Sheas, the Gallaghers, the McGuckins, the McCawleys and the McNaes to name just a few. The Irish nuns, brothers and priests delivered classes and sermons in a lilting Irish brogue. There is no mistaking this heritage. Our home was adorned with posters for the Irish Republic and that day of martyrs in Easter 1916; my father was a formidable criminal advocate in the Irish oratory tradition; and any gathering would most often descend into Irish singalongs. You know the type, Oh Danny Boy, with alcohol flowing freely. And with the call that comes for those whose imaginary homelands lay abroad, I returned for the first time to Ireland too see what sense I could make of it all. The resulting work is drawn from Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea and also London and Paris. The work participates in a number of architectural genres but it is the fabled rabbit hole which provides a compelling logic which structures this series. The rabbit hole, at once provides entry to a dark underworld and a place, perhaps, of wonderment, curiosity and bemusement. This particular rabbit hole, a onetime target of the IRA, provides the entry to other works in the series which conjure wafer thin sincerity, menacing obscenity, optical redundancy and diasporic departure. Alice is nowhere to be found. The trauma that may be found inscribed in many of the sites which form the subject of these photographs creates a map of geo-psycho-violent-energy that we seem only too willing to extend with alarming ferocity. Events of recent days in our pacific neighbour New Zealand, in a city already deeply riven by serial catastrophic events, are evidence enough that hatred, division and intolerance are pulling our world apart, with no sign of it letting up. If it’s not the priests performing acts of indecency upon innocent children, its sick individuals all too willing to post their horror online on corporate snuff platforms and leaders fomenting further hate and division to secure some electoral edge. Enough of the vanilla excuses, the deniers and the apologists. which provide shelter, comfort, utility and efficiency. His photographs operate across a spectrum of established photographic genre. Part portrait, indexical document, social commentary, and elegy; he toys with viewers habituated knowledge systems of the built environment.A consistent Cuthbert motif is compositional isolation; enhancing the forensic detail of the camera lens, while elevating architectural studies into the genre of portraiture. Within this slippery pictorial terrain, it is easy to anthropomorphise. Cuthbert’s structures stand resolute, staggering against all odds, where simple survival is in itself heroic. Cuthbert works exclusively with large format colour film photography techniques. With an eye and skill honed by the rigours of museum collections documentation - his day job - Cuthbert provides an important challenge to lofty notions of heritage.
